Director Biography – James Chalmers

James Chalmers was born in London to Scottish parents. He has spent most of his life living in NW England. He has autism spectrum disorder which makes the social aspects of his life quite difficult. However his Asperger’s has endowed him with a sharp eye for character study and details of places and events. When he managed to get early retirement from a hated engineering management job. this was the opportunity to embark on the much happier life of creativity.

He took up film making as a result of a failed promise to make one his musical plays into a film. James discovered that with film making – from the first idea through to the performance of the finished piece to an audience at a Film Festival, he has total control of the creative process. He shoots films in a traditional way, more typical of 20th century cinema than of today’s handheld camera work, green screen and CGI. He erects small self-built sets in the living room of his house. and loves making props and costumes.

James likes to tell a story. Everything from the Life of Lady Hamilton, for example, to the demise of the Cornish mining industry. His scripts are written with a poetic lilt, and pursued from start to finish with an energetic focus that’s characteristic of someone on the autism spectrum.
