In 1969, the peaceful village of Dekan in the Qasrok district, located 95 kilometers east of Duhok, fell victim to a ruthless attack by the Ba’ath regime. Amidst the chaos, the villagers sought refuge in a nearby cave.

As the conflict escalated, the Iraqi armed forces launched a relentless assault on the area. The ensuing violence and bombings shattered the tranquility of Dekan, leaving its inhabitants in a desperate struggle for survival.

Tragically, the horrors of war reached a devastating climax when the Iraqi forces, in an act of unspeakable brutality, set fire to the cave sheltering 75 women, girls, and children. The flames engulfed the cave, claiming the lives of countless innocents and leaving a scar on the collective memory of Dekan forever.

In “Dekan Cave Massacre” we embark on a journey to uncover the untold story of this horrific tragedy. Through the sorrowful accounts of the victims’ relatives and the courageous testimony of a lone female survivor, we bear witness to the atrocities committed against the people of Dekan.
